Elon Musk Reveals His Next Idea as ‘The Boring Company’

Elon Musk has spent his career building companies with flashy goals such as self-driving cars, human travel to Mars, environmental preservation and friendly artificial intelligence. Now, he’s ready to bore.

Tunnels, not people.

On Saturday, Musk took to Twitter to rant about traffic. But he didn’t just passive aggressively subtweet bad drivers. In his typical fashion, he offered a solution to the problem.

The man just loves a good pun, it seems.

Musk has long been a proponent of new technologies for moving people. Earlier this decade, he began drumming up momentum for the Hyperloop concept — a mode of mass transportation that would propel pods through above-ground pneumatic tubes. But as of this weekend, he’s pondering subterranean solutions.

The timing is right. Last week, Musk was among 18 tech executives who met with President-elect Donald Trump as part of a Strategic and Policy Forum. Musk’s tunnel vision (pun intended) is in line with Trump’s emphasis on infrastructure. The president-elect has proposed $1 trillion of government infrastructure investment to boost the U.S. economy.
